One Computer at a Time
I’m Dan Dueck, owner of Microdyne Computer Services.
This is a little different from a typical about page on a computer repair site. After much thought I decided to include it here. It helps explain my approach and where my drive comes to do what I do.
When I was young I was very vulnerable. A physical condition that was visibly noticeable made me an easy target for bullying at school. School was hard and getting chased home became regular. Home didn't offer a safe place from school and the ones that were supposed to protect me and teach me as I grew were far from that. The very institutions designed to protect children failed me. They turned a blind eye.
I’ll admit I was a different kid in school. I was very shy and socially awkward. Given my home life I had some behavioural and social issues that made me stand out. I grew up without the skills or confidence that I needed.
As I got older I realized those limitations placed upon me as a child could be unlearned. I set on a path to better myself and be better for others that faced the same things, giving them what I never had.
Around the same time I started learning computers, martial arts became a big part of my life. That training lasted about 26 years. Along with personal growth, I used what I learned to work with kids, giving them the skills I wished I had. Both the computer work and the training continued until recent health limited what I can do physically. Now working from home, My little furry friend is at work with me every day! ;)
My early experiences shaped how I work with clients now. Because I know what it’s like to need someone to listen offering real help and clear guidance. I take the time to understand how each person uses their computer and what actually matters to them.
I had been in IT for about 10 years before I moved to Medicine Hat in 2004 and opened my business right away. Through Microdyne I’ve donated many computers to people who would otherwise find them unattainable. I’ve also taken on students to help them get a head start in IT. Some kids it was just for a day or two helping them put together their very first computer. A few have gone on to earn their BSc and masters in computer science.
I didn't only want a way to earn a living. I wanted real one on one time with people. This was to help me but also a benifit to my clients.
Most of my work is in mainstream computer repair along with cybersecurity for the home user, (endpoint security) especially seniors and our more vulnerable population.
Now with health changes and working from home my mission hasn’t changed. I explain things clearly, give practical steps so problems don’t keep coming back, and work with the person when needed as well as the computer.
My goal remains to make sure each and every client gets the one on one and individual computer service they deserve.
Not all service work is identical. Computers are unique and personal to each and everyone of us in how we use them and how they’re set up.
Living in Medicine Hat for the past 25 years, working with people here, the many friendships gained, and my personal growth have all been part of doing the work I love -one computer at a time.
